2000 Sonoma Creek Chardonnay
The vivid colors and the artistic interpretation of a horse used on the label of this wine are something of a tribute to the colorful past of the property. Purchased in 1899 by the great grandfather of the current owner, Tom Larson, the ranch played host to the Sonoma Rodeo for over two decades.
It was on the site of the old rodeo in the heart of Sonoma Valley’s Carneros District that Tom and his father decided to plant a 40-acre block of Chardonnay in the early 1980’s. The Sonoma Creek Winery came into being when they started producing more wine than they could drink!
Their 2000 Chardonnay is definitely a strong performer, exhibiting a character and style on a par with many wines costing twice as much.
It’s light, pale gold color does not prepare you for the intensity of its bouquet. Fat, ripe aromas of honey, fruit and oak waft from the glass.
These powerful and intense characteristics continue once you taste the wine. The lush fruit and oak flavors fill the mouth and while the strong, smoky oakiness dominates the overall sensation, the wine finishes with a clean elegance.
This strong-flavored wine is a perfect partner for a thick tuna steak or a butter-drenched lobster. Serve it with almost anything you grill this summer, even a steak.
